What does Mitchell Kapor Foundation fund?
The Foundation was created as a private entity by entrepreneur and philanthropist Mitchell Kapor to support organizations that work to ensure fairness and equity for vulnerable communities, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2012, we will focus on these areas of work:
- Voting Integrity & Civic Engagement - community organizing and elections protection
- College Bound Brotherhood - increasing college readiness for African American young men
- Green Access (renewals only) - green jobs, climate justice, food justice
- Info Tech for Social Impact (NEW!)
For more information about the Foundation, please see the "About Us" section of our website.
How do I submit a grant request?
The Foundation has a number of key partner organizations whom we've supported over the past several years. If your organization is not a current grant recipient, please first determine your organization's eligibility and alignment with our priorities by reading our Guidelines. Then contact us to have a brief conversation about your intended work. If we feel it is a potentially good match, complete our online application by the stated deadline.
We do not respond to paper requests or Letters of Intent (LOI).
Final Reports are required of all grant recipients and are due one month after the end of a grant cycle. Grant recipients may access their final reports via our CyberGrants system by clicking HERE. Please note that Final Reports are also called Impact Reports within CyberGrants.
For technical assistance requests, please see our Assistance & Advising page.
Does the Foundation only fund San Francisco Bay Area programs?
Since we are based in San Francisco, we prefer to support organizations that have an impact in the San Francisco Bay Area, but are open to learn about other opportunities.
We do not award grants to organizations based or primarily working outside of the United States.
How does the Foundation work with grant recipients after a grant is awarded?
We seek to establish transparent and trusting relationships with grant recipients and thus welcome regular communication between grants officers and grant recipient organizations.
In addition to our grants officers, the Director of Assistance & Advising is available to help grant recipients build organizational capacity, problem solve, and connect with other organizations and resources in order to strengthen their work.
Please feel free to contact us.
Is it possible to use the Foundation's facility for meetings and special events?
Yes, the Foundation does provide limited access to our facility for our grant recipients. For guidelines on using our facility and to submit a facility use request, see our Facility Use page.
